Advice please!

Hi,

In my conservatory, I have a collection of carnivorous plants, one of which
is a Nepenthes alata. Earlier this year, it was suggested to me that I
should consider growing one or two orchids as both like the same humid
conditions. On a visit to a local plant nursery, I bought a flowering Orchid
cambria vuylstekeara. Since then it has grown into a very fine plant indeed
and has now stopped flowering, leaving just the green stem. Would it be best
to cut away the stem now, or leave it to brown and die before doing so?
This is the first time that I have attempted to grow an orchid indoors and
I'm hooked already!.

Thanks, in advance.

Hi Mike, I don't want to be a nit picker, but you should learn to
properly name your plants (& the one you have is a good one) It's name
should be stated as: Vuylstekeara Cambria & there is a good chance that
the 'clonal name is 'Plush' (I say that as 'Plush' is the most widely
distributed 'clone of Cambria.) If it is indeed 'Plush' then it carries
2 awards: FCC/AOS/RHS so the tag should read Vuylstekeara Cambria
'Plush' FCC/AOS/ RHS. As to your question: you can cut the flower stalk
or let it die back as you wish. If you opt to cut it be careful not to
cut any part of the plant. I usually cut but leave about 1" of stem
which will turn to straw & you can later just snap off. If you are
indeed "Hooked" you have started with a very fine plant. Good Growing,
Bill

Re: Advice please!

Bill is correct, but I need to add more.

The nepenthes needs very warm conditions, while the vuylstekeara needs much
cooler conditions to thrive.

There's a lot more than RH to consider!

Hi Bill,
Thank you for replying to my question. I usually do try to name my plants
correctly. In this instance I copied the name of my orchid as it was printed
on the label, supplied by the nursery. However, I should have started
Cambria with a capital 'C' and not lower case.
Thank you also for the good news that my very first orchid is a good one,
and an award winner. I have altered the label accordingly.
