Newbie
Hi all,
Just thought I'd introduce myself, my name is Jo and I live in Western
Australia.
At the moment I have about 15 Dendrobium Kingianums, 2 Dendrobiums, 4
Cymbidium, 1 Epidendrum and 1 Paphiopedilum. I've only been growing
Orchids for about a year or so and am totally addicted! I look forward
to the discussions in here :)
Cheers for now,
Jo :)

Re: Newbie
Hi Jo
Welcome to the group.
Where abouts are you in WA - BIG state! I suggest you join a WA orchid
society if you haven't already. Tony Watkinson <emntee [at] iinet.net.au> is
President of the Species Orchid Society of WA and if you are into species
orchids I am sure he would love to have you as a member and if not he could
direct you to a more general club.
Cheers
John

Welcome, Jo! We do have some interesting conversations around here........

Re: Newbie
Welcome. I'd love to see some pictures of your kingianums. We don't post
pics here but we use alt.binaries.pictures.orchids for that. Hope to see
some of your pictures there.

Re: Newbie
Welcome, Jo, from yet another Aussie. Glad to note your interest in Dendrobes.
(The longer standing contributors here are resigned to ny tunnel vision.)
John mentioned Tony Watkinson to you. If you have downloaded the thread "Who we
are revisited" you will see John's response there, as well as those of several
others of the group. Hope you enjoy our company.

Hi Jo
I am, also in WA and connected to a number of Orchid Societies. If you
let me know what suburb or town you are living in, I can direct you to
a Society in your area where you can get loads of info re orchids.

Re: Newbie
Thanks to you all for the friendly greetings, it's nice to meet such a
welcoming bunch :)
Joanna, Thanks for the welcome :)
Wendy, Thanks :) Love the Peter pan reference btw ^ ^
John, I'm in the South of Western Australia, in Albany. The weather
here tends to be a bit cooler than it gets in Perth, which suits me
very well :)
Diana, looking forward to the conversations :)
Gary, I'd be more than happy to post any pics I can find of my Kingies,
most of which are hybrids. I've only been growing them a year so I
don't have many pics yet, but I will post what I do have :)
Dave, Thanks for the hello, great to meet a fellow Den enthusiast! I'm
afraid I'm rather tunnel-visioned when it comes to Kingies, the first
orchid I ever got was a Kingie and they remain my firm favorites :)
Tony, nice to meet you, I live in Albany WA and I do know of the Orchid
Society down here, however I keep forgetting when exactly they have
their meetings :/
Thank You for being able to refer me on, although I do enjoy growing
these beauties by myself some advice and tips would go a long way to
help as I still consider myself a novice and don't know that much in
the way of technical details of Orchid Care. :)
Cheers all,
Jo

Tis a pity, cos if you grew the Albany Pitcher Plant I would be begging some
of of you. I have been trying to get my hands on a few plants of it for
years.
Please keep me in mind if you ever see any locally available from salvage
etc I would be very interested in trading for some.

Hi, Raevyn!
First, find alt.binaries.pictures.orchids on your news server (If you are
posting through Google groups, this won't work since Google does not carry
binary groups.) and go there. Then write a message and use the paper clip
button to attach a file from you hard disk.
Feel free to ask again if you don't succeed.

Hi, Jo. I'll add my welcome to you.
Looking at the headers from your message, it appears to me that Reka's
fear about you using Google to use the newsgroups is true. You can do
nothing with pictures from there. Pictures or not, there are MUCH
better ways to read and write to nesgroups than going through Google.
In the mean time, the way to show pictures here is to post them to a web
site first then tell us where to look.
For example... and I've never tried posting a picture from image station
here but it should work... here is a picture of my Paph venustum var.
pardinum that came into bloom for the first time this week:

So in other words just post a link to the pic/s? I wasn't sure whether

p.s that's a very nice paph you have there! :)

Kye,
Paradisia in Victoria produce TC'ed plants by the bucket load. Their
Ceph's are quite common in Melbourne nurseries. You should be able to
get your local nursery/garden centre to special order you some in very
easily.

When I was a Sr. in High School - 12th year of school for our
international friends on another schedule... They closed the school
finally due to snow. First time in 17 years. Of course they waited
until 1pm (after lunch breaks) and after the buses in town quit at
noon. We will not go into how deep or long the walk home. But it is
the only time I ever walked down the center of the street. <G>

My primary school was only half a mile up the road (black bitumen). So I walked
to school, home for lunch, back to school, & home in the afternoon. Townsville
was hot enough that we all went to school barefoot. Have you ever tried walking
barefoot on bitumen at noon in a tropical summer? We all developed soles like
old leather. Even when we went to high school (& wore shoes & socks and a *tie*
- oh the culture shock!) the shoes came off as soon as we got home. At 17 I
spent a couple of weeks in hospital, and my feet peeled! About 1/8 inch of
horny callous peeled off both soles. I've been a tenderfoot ever since.

Re: Newbie
Hi Dave
I remember similar early summer days in Melbourne as kids. We didn't go to
school barefoot (a bit more cultured in Melbourne) but once we got home from
school we immediately took off our shoes and ran barefoot on the black
bitumen road (impregnated with gravel!) to harden our feet ready for the
summer holidays when we didn't wear shoes.
Like you, I too am now a tenderfoot and can't walk barefoot on pebbles any
more!
Cheers
John
