on dayliles that go dormant what is considered minimum time and temp for
them to be dormant and still not effect their growth and bud set?
i purchased two daylilies at the end of november that i received bare
root. they were tiny single fans that i did not feel safe just slapping
into the ground for fear of losing them. so i planted them in pots and
stuck them in a cold spot in my greenhouse. they have gotten cold enough
on two occasions for the leaves to all die but within two days i had new
leafs popping out of the dirt. what are the chances that w/ alot of
work these plants might bloom this year?
i tend to give new plants alot of attention so that they grow strong
enough the first year, (becuase i am cheap and buy baby plants, or
divide a new plant if it is nice sized), so that they are nice and
strong by the end of season. i have taken 3 hostas in 1/2 pots and
turned them into 18 plants in three years. all new perennials are
placed in a special bed that is very loose, w/ lots of organic material,
they are watered twice a week and sometimes more in the dead of summer.
by the end of summer they are very healthy and strong plants. late
summer into fall i usually lift them from this bed and plant in their
permanent spot or divide if i am trying to increase them. this bed is
very nice as i don't even have to dig up the plants i literally just
plunge my hands in to it to work around the plants roots and lift the
plant out of the bed.
