Hi,

Can two rose varieties that don't set hips be hybridized together? I
have a Mister Lincoln and a Golden Celebration in my garden that I
would like to breed together at some point. From what I understand,
hybridizing requires roses that hip. Everything I've been able to find
about the two varieties I want to use says they don't hip. Can it be
done? If so. how?

One method is to cut all the pollen stalks off of one bloom and use a
bloom from another plant to pollenate the first bloom. Cut the pollen
stalks off a new bloom (be early on this, actually BEFORE the bloom
fully opens) and use the pollen from a mature bloom, swab the new bloom
strongly and maybe tape the old to the new and leave it there. Slip a
paper sack over the pollenated bloom and wait for results. If it takes
the hip will form. Leave it till fall then place it in a refrigerator
till spring, get it cold but not frozen, break it open and plant the
seed. This is a from memory, you can find the whole procedure with
