I just got one a month ago. Low-medium light plants with TALL flower
spikes! The leaves are really nice.

I also just got a Nun's orchid which I like even more!

And My paph has rebloomed!!!!!!!!!

AHHhhhh, SPRING!!!!!!

I'm no expert with them yet, have 5 or 6 different species from a few
different genera that aren't exactly being grown to their full potential.
One big thing with some of the species I have is to let them dry out a
little between waterings, and some of them like to have a fairly open mix.
Don't pot them too deep. On the ones that put up new growths very close
together you may need to keep the crown of the plant at the very surface of
the mix to avoid rot (this may not be true for all species but it's
certainly something to watch out for.) My rambling ones have very succulent
stems that like to hang out of the pot and will also rot easily if kept wet.
I haven't tried any of them in S/H yet.

Ludisia are cute, and the only one I have doing well right now
is in SH.
Haven't mucked with the others.

Some that I am considering are:
Ludisia Discolor
Goodyera Hispada
Macodes Sanderiana and Petola
I plan to grow them inside. Funny, I always forget to search this forum
before I ask a question!
There has been many posts about Jewel Orchids here as I belatedly found
out!

I've grown Ludisia discolor for a number of years. If it were any easier it
would be a weed. I've grown it in sphagnum, seedling bark mix, phal mix, and
peat/perlite mix. It blooms like clockwork every year around March here in
the greenhouse, earlier in the house. Any piece will root and grow. Macodes
petola I've had for a shorter time but it seems to like it more in sphagnum
than the other mixes. I haven't tried either in S/H.

Joe,

These are wonderful plants. I have two Macodes petola and a ludesia. I
have two Macodes because I was afraid I'd kill one and wanted to double my
chances for success.

I grow the Macodes in a shallow bulbpan (clay) in loose spagnum moss. The
ludesia is in a larger bulb pan in a mix of promix with added perlite. To
keep the dirt from washing out of the pan I covered the surface with alifor
(clay pellets). In the shallow pan both of these plants tend to grow into a
nice colony.

The real pleasure of these plants is that they appreciate the greenhouse
environment and don't require much light. They fit nicely below other
plants that crave the light.

One thing I do dislike is when they bloom. The flower spike tends to ruin
the symmetry of the leaves and soon that growth that blooms isn't as
attractive. Soon other growths develop and it is a minor issue.

When I see more of these types of plants available I will be adding them to
my collection.

Well, I dropped by Palmers Orchids today in Pasadena and Mrs Palmer
rummaged around in her clippings and picked up a Ludisia rizome and
gave it to me. So, we'll see if it will root and off we go! ;-))

that's how i got mine; a local nursery had gone thru theirs in hanging
baskets and pruned; i looked all soulful and asked if i could have a
cutting. the nursery lady relented and let me have one. i started it
in water until it started a couple roots, then potted it in a 4 inch
pot in a mix of peat, soil, long fibre sphag and bark. it's in a north
window and just getting started on growing again for this season
(probably too cold up against the window, but that's the way life is.)

I accidently broke off a piece of Ludisia discolor. I just stuck it in a
pot of moist pro-mix and put it on the shelf with the other plants. Off it
grows. No Fuss No Muss.

I wish all orchids were this easy.
