New website
Has anybody seen the new gardening website www.pvgc2.co.uk? It is really
nice to see a site that looks so nice and is easy to use. I found it
very cheap too. I'll be interested to see what you all think about it

OK, my thoughts are thus:
any site that requires spam to get noticed isn't worth visiting.

It loaded OK for me but appears to be just another garden centre. If
you want one of those, surely it is better to have a face-to-face
service and use your local one. People around Maidstone, where it seems
to be based, will probably like it. I thought it was a very nice site.

Usually, by having good content so they are picked up by search engines.
Not by spamming contrary to the charter of this newsgroup. That's likely
to alienate potential customers.

I have no idea whether you are the owner of this website or genuinely a

However, should I believe that someone had dishonestly posed as a
satisfied customer to advertise their website, I would be extremely
worried about doing business with them

I can happily say I was a very satisifed customer of the website and
was purely looking to see if anybody else had used it, as I had never
heard of it before I stumbled across it, incidentally whilst looking
for something else. I was publicising what I felt was a good cause,
that's all, and I am surprised at the cynical nature of the responses

We've had a history of people posing as customers to advertise their
website. One gets a bit cynical after the first dozen

That is rather harsh. After all, it is the site of a garden centre,
presumably small and privately owned and not one of the big boys. He
was asked to explain himself and did so. After the reception he got
here, I am surprised he bothered.

What do you man, harsh? It was a factual explanation of why so many of
us feel cynical at 'I found this great website' messages. It was only
polite to explain why he had the cynical response.

I think there'd be a less cynical response if people who wish to announce
such things did so honestly and openly and without - as some do - repeating
themselves. Paulo may well be genuine but it's certainly the case that we
get plenty who are not. ;-(

Yes, I agree. But in this case, he has done everything he has been
asked and the firm in question seems to be a small independent garden
centre. I wish we had more of them. (Although in Herts. we luckily
have several independents in the same place at Crews Hill).

It just surprised me, I thought that as this was a gardening website,

Don't worry about it. Stay and join us and chat about gardening!
It's not actually a gardening website, btw, it's a gardening newsgroup.
But you're accessing it second-hand through a website, whereas most of
the rest of us are accessing it directly.

Thank you June, I agree, that the smaller garden centres need all the
support they can get, and I for one am happy to give all the support I
can, whether that be by telling people about the site somewhere like
this or talking to my friends about it. Those of you who followed the
link will have seen it is not in fact a SPAM site or anything like
that, but, as I said, a nice website I found whilst looking for the
site of another garden centre near my home. I resent being referred to
as a cheat and perhaps if some of you were a little less cynical,
smaller businesses would still be flourishing, even in this digital
age, and the monoploy of the ever expanding, 'do-what-they-like'
tycoons would have a chance of being broken. I will continue shopping
online and will continue to use Pleasant View, whatever you may think

There clearly wasn't any point in explaining to you why some of us
reacted as we did, was there?
Your brief first message was couched in exactly the sort of phrases used
by owners who pose as customers to 'recommend' their site, and as none
of us know you from Adam, your message was all we had to go on. Had you
put more information in your first message, I might have looked at the
site - sadly, it seemed like a case of yet another dishonest site owner,
so I didn't bother.
It's not a reflection on either you or the GC you recommended.
And without knowing where we purchase from, I don't think you can blame
us for the demise of smaller businesses.

Sorry to disagree but the site is not nice or any easier to use than any
other website.
The prices are not inexpensive and the amount of detail given on products is
limited.
This is a typical example of an existing retailer deciding after a decade or
more that perhaps internet retailing may be a good idea.
This site really is a half hearted attempt
You will need to produce something much better to get me to consider
dealing with you.

Oh well. After 28 posts, you've made sure he's had a damned good
grilling and made his usenet experience most uncomfortable. (Nothing
new there then).

By incorporating useful content which is indexed by search engines, and
linked to from other sites. My site had 2208 page views yesterday, and
while I have referred people to it on occasion, or incorporated it in my
sig file, most traffic comes from Google.

I think it's a bit confusing to name a nursery after another more famous
one. Christine Yeo's wonderful salvia nursery is called Pleasant View
Although it's in Cornwall, not Kent won't some people think they are on
another nursery's site?.
I found this Maidstone nursery's site a bit 'bitty' in appearance and
have to agree with Rupert that the prices aren't cheap.,
