Green slime

I have a water feature (a lions head spouting water from its mouth).
After a couple of weeks parts of it become coated with a green slime which
blocks the pump.
Is there anything that I can add to the water to prevent this?

Barley straw. You can get bottles of extract.

Hozelock produce a liquid treatment for just that problem. Available from
any good aquatic centre :)
