We have got ours from all sorts of places over the years and now have 8. 5
along the back of the garage coupled together, 2 at the side of the house
with an overflow from one to other and 1 not in use yet but will go under
the massive verandah I am in the middle of building across the back of the
house :-))............ only rain has stopped play!!!

WARNING. If you intend to couple 2 or more together, make sure they are
stright sided and that the butts can fit 'face to face' at the coupler.
(Overflow from with hose from one to another no ploblem) Many water butts
had ribs or very slopy sides ;-((

Why on earth don't the water companies supply butts at cost price. They
are forever bleating on about the amount of water we all waste - here's
a chance for them to reduce it and increase their own profits.

At cost? I doubt it.
........

£15.00 for the Butt and £8.00 for the stand. This included a free Rain
Diverter Kit

The Butt has a capacity of 220 Litres, a height of 930 mm and a diameter of
665 mm

Don't know if the deal is still on, it was a pick up, by arrangement and
timetable, on June 18th from one of three car parks on the Isle of Wight,
but the web site is/was www.getcomposting.com/swds

The company organising it is Blackwall, Freepost LS6334, Leeds. LS14 1YY.
Maybe they are doing one in your area, but for the special price, it will be
through your Water Company, at cost? Yes :-)))))

Hope that helps

Cheers Mike

I'm half convinced. The price is less than I expected. How many were
you entitled to at that price?

We have three, bought through Yorkshire Water at that price - I think the
first might have been less because it was some time ago.

Blackwall is just up the road from us. After the first offer, when we
realised how efficient the butts were, we asked Blackwall if we could buy
more. We could - but not at that price. When the offer came again we snapped
it up.

I also use a smaller barrel with lid which we rescued from somewhere and my
mother's dolly tub on each side of the greenhouse to collect roof run-off,
it's surprising how much we collect from an 8' x 6' pitched roof.

The butt which collects from a shed isn't big enough, the excess is diverted
into a plastic dustbin.

I water vegetables daily, I'm delighted with the butts. And since our water
is metered it also keeps down our bills, although that's not why we bought
the butts.

Only 'half'??

We were only allowed two at that price and when I turned up at the Car Park
at the pre arranged time, there were two massive trailers with the local Sea
Cadets and their Officers helping guide the people, cars and directing
traffic in general :-))

Very well organised and if you get the chance to take up the offer .......
grab it :-)) You know I only talk sense :-))

Our water is metered too :-))

After our overnight/early morning rain, our water butts are up again, with
the new one FULL! We now have the equivalent of 'about' 5 full butts, but
the rain has eased to a very fine drizzle.

:-(( would have had more had I not left a tap open :-((

Big placcy dustbins? Old water tanks being removed from houses? The
latter's what my parents used to use, anyway.

How can you do that?

Don't you close the tap when you remove whatever vessel you're filling?

The ideal is a large capacity one with a tap at the bottom to fill smaller
vessels such as watering cans. To get the vessels under the taps you need
the butt to be on a suitable - and strong - stand. Water is heavy.

Then you need a proper, well fitting but easily removed lid. Ideally it will
have holes/slots to let in the rain. The lid is to keep out foreign bodies
and daylight - which will quickly encourage algae to grow.

The best butts have a gizmo (a 'diverter') which diverts water from the fall
pipe from the roof gutter to collect the water. When the butt is full the
water goes down to the drain and doesn't just overflow onto the ground.

Proper butts can be connected with properly fitted hoses so that when one is
full the water will go to the next, and so on.

Modern butts are well designed and far, far better than a dustbin (I know, I
have one) or any other tank which will fill with water, have to be baled out
and will overflow - possibly where you don't want it to overflow.

Been there. Wouldn't again.

My 'overflow' dustbin will be replaced a.s.a.p., the dolly tub will stay
because it's part of the family but it's fraught with problems (and algae
and mosquito larvae and the occasional drowned bird), the other 'barrel'
outside the greenhouse will stay because it's the right size for that
position and Spouse has fitted it with a hose from the gutter and a properly
fitting lid. I don't mine baling water from that with my small watering can
for the greenhouse.

I believe that the design, production and encouragement to use these butts
is one of the best environmentally friendly moves of our time.

Bricks. Come to think of it I think my mother's existing waterbutt is
on bricks. There's a pipe near the bottom of the tank with a tap on it
for removing water from the bottom.

Piece of corrugated something or other, could well be roofing asbestos
from when the garage was re-roofed some years back. It seems to work,
anyway.

'flack'? That's the stuff others fling at you 'cos they are not as good as
you ;-))
Not my fault they are not up to my standard ;-))

Are you sitting comfortably? Then I will begin ;-)

Two water butts side by side. Numbers 1 and 2.
1 receives the water from the roof
2 is the overflow from 1

Water Butt number 3 turns up on the scene for the new Verandah. Not very
pretty :-((

Change 2 for 3 as 2 is in a not very often used Courtyard
2 has a lot of water in it. Use buckets and watering cans to empty 2 into
4,5,6,7,& 8 at back of garage :-))
The tap on 2 is quite high up :-( and soon runs dry, so tilt butt 2 on its
base. LEAVE TAP OPEN whilst this operation is going on to make butt 2 light
enough to move :-))
2 now light enough.
change 2 for 3
2 now spare :-))))

Next morning

Raining :-))

Butt 1 and 3 full.
Still raining
Verandah not ready.
Fix 2 to take overflow from 1 and 3 :-))

Water level gets to tap height!!!!!

and you know the rest ;-((

Mike

I do wish I was as perfect as 'some' on this newsgroup!!!

My garden slopes upwards away from the house. Tired of carrying cans of
water up the garden I've mounted two barrels next to the gutter
down-pipe but raised higher than usual (and need to be another 6-9
inches higher with hindsight). Then I have another barrel at normal
stand height off the ground 2/3 of the way up the garden (around 35ft
away). The three barrels are connected by two syphons made from lengths
of hose.

While watering the strawberries this evening it was a nice feeling that
the water filling the can was being brought uphill by gravity. :)

Much quicker to dip the can than to wait around for it to fill from a
tap. The requirement then becomes for it to be not so deep that you
fall in when scooping up the last water from the bottom!

How would us reducing waste increase their profits?

Water rates are the same whatever. And if we are on a meter, their
profits are increased the more we waste.

Back trouble comes from lifting with your body bent forward. If you're
upright when you lift, no problem. So a standard water butt on a couple
of rows of bricks works well for me - about chest height, so I'm not
bending as I heave the watering can out. But I do have to be careful
when I'm balancing on a tree branch bending down into the butt trying to
get out the last few inches of water ;-)

Handbags at dawn.
I can't see the connection between saving water and the effects on the
environment.
I agree water is precious in that it is essential but it is not in short
supply.
The means of distribution and storage are poor and any attempt to rectify
the problem would impact on the profitability of the suppliers.

Um, I don't think I mentioned *saving* water. It's the USE of water which
has an effect on the environment.

If we don't use tap water when we don't need to that saves a lot of
processing which is not environmentally friendly at any stage although the
processing is far better now than it used to be.

If we use roof water to grow vegetables (or even flowers) rather than it
just running into the drains that saves a lot of processing ... <see above>

Actually I'm pretty strong but trying to lift a full Haws can of water
from lower than halfway down the 350gll butt we have is incredibly
strenuous! I can only just lift it!

I do have or will when it arrives, one of the siphoning gadgets shown on
Gardeners World a few weeks ago. This should mean I can get the water to
travel down a hose pipe to water the potatoes at least.

That surprises me, because you are a lot stronger than I am! My watering
cans hold between 1.5 and 2 gallons - are you trying to lift out more
than I am?

The lifting from lower down isn't the problem for me - that's much the
same as lifting off the ground. It's the last bit, lifting it clear of
the butt at about shoulder height, which I find hardest, and I have to
do that however full or empty the butt is.

The only problem I have with a nearly empty butt is that to reach the
can I have to let my feet come off the ground, so I have to be very sure
my CG is on the outside of the butt, not on the inside!

Our local farm shop sells recycled industrial plastic barrels for about
=A320. They have a rubber lid like a dustbin lid, and are perfectly
good for the job. Mine is bright blue.

And I can't understand why few people mention the fact that aquifers
get their water from groundwater NOT sewage treatment plants! That being
the case in about 25 - 50 years (However long it takes to percolate) we
are going to have no water in the aquifers as all the gardeners will not
be able to water more than a smidgen and paved over front and back
gardens are going to mean a lot less water soaking into the soil!
