Posted on 2006-06-19 03:14:08 by ken

can anyone tell me what these little red bugs are that are on my heliopsis
plants, they are tiny but can be seen real easy ,and if you pick them they
disintigrate and you are left with red all over your fingers! are they
harmful to the plant and if so what to use to get rid of them. I have
sprayed them with plant insecticide but they keep coming back.

Might try Googleing Clover Mites and see if that is what you have.

maybe cochineal bugs though they are usually associated with cactus.

"Chiggers" are also called redbugs, in the spider family. Do they
have 8 legs?

Chiggers would only have 6 legs...they are the babies of Harvest mites
that would have the 8 legs.

They are red spider mites. Any if you keep using insecticide you might
kill your plant. The best thing to use on them is soapy water. Take a
capful of Dawn (or you favorite dishwashing liquid) and mix it with a
quart of water and spray the plant until it is dripping wet. You may
need to do that every four days or so until the mites are gone but it is
a lot safer than what you are using and works a lot better.
