#1: Newbie with question
Posted on 2005-07-28 11:49:43 by AlexanderRex
Greetings all,
I recently purchased a set of tools and one of them is a knob cutter. From
what I understand, this is not a frequently used tool, but it sure seems to
resemble a root cutter.
Is there any harm in using a knob cutter as a root cutter?
Thanks,
Alexander Fraser

Knob cutter, also named colloquially as a "knuckle cutter", is best used for
making a gouge cut when you want get down inside the surface you are working
on. Sometimes it is useful when working around the base of the trunk to
remove an unwanted root, but generally, I don't use a knob cutter in the
root area because this is an expensive tool which is easily dulled by the
grit surrounding the roots. I usually use a cheap pair of scissors for
normal root work. For larger roots, I use a reciprocating Saws-All electric
saw.

Alexander:
The Knob Cutter introduces a concave cut, which promotes healing at the site where a branch has been removed on a trunk or where a secondary branch has been removed from a primary branch, etc.
The Root Cutter introduces a flat, clean cut, which promotes healthy root growth. Large root cutters are particularly of value when dealing with collected material whose roots need to be chased back to accommodate pot culture.

I use the knob cutter pretty sparingly, as its bite is
deep. I think of it as a levered chisel which provides greater
control when digging. For most limb pruning I am more likely to
use my root cutter with its more precise, straight cut. I've been
happier with the results that way.
