#1: New planting advice - Golden Ash tree

Posted on 2005-08-22 23:49:36 by Mordwid

Hi all,

I purchased a bare rooted Fraxinus Excelsior 'Aurea' Golden Ash tree (from
Bunnings!) about a week ago and planted - you
can see the pics here:

http://www.trick.com.au/tree.htm

As this is the first tree I have ever planted I am a little worried whether
I did it right.

I dug a big hole and dropped the tree in so that the top of the root ball is
about 1 inch below the earth surface.

However when you look at the pics it seems weird that the trunk has that
branch growing off it so low down.

Should I have dropped the tree deeper in the ground so that the 'branch'
becomes the trunk????

Damn newbie questions......sorry./

I dont want to see this tree die or look spasticated !

Thanks.

PS Can't talk to Bunnings as they're not interested unless I want to cut it
or drill it :-))

PPS. I've had some advice that I should be pruning off the graft after maybe
a year?

I would have planted it a couple of inches deeper. Have a close look at it. You should be able to
see how deep it was planted before it was dug up. Just make absolutely sure the graft is not
buried.

That is the graft.

Doing that would kill the tree.

You really should be supporting your local nursery. Fuck Bunnings. They do their utmost to send
local businesses broke.

Another fantastic way to destroy a tree. Whoever told you that is a fool.

One thing to look for is growth below the graft. If any branches spring forth, prune them off.

thanks Grumpy...yeah I agree with your sentiment - impulse purchase.

won't be doing again - no back up, no knowledge, no advice.
